Scotland is a
wild and beautiful country. The moors and mountains are scenic and
rugged and the lochs are deep and mysterious. It offers an ideal
location for a holiday, exploring the local countryside, walking,
playing golf, fishing, cycling, or simply relaxing and taking in the
beautiful scenery. It is a mystic land full of tradition and history.
Scotland comprises the northern
third of the island of Great Britain and is a fairly small country, with
a population of just over 5 million. Although Edinburgh is the capital
of Scotland, Glasgow it is not the largest city with a population of
over 1.1 million.
The flag of Scotland, known as the
Saltire or St. Andrew's Cross, dates (at least in legend) from the 9th
century, and is thus the oldest national flag still in use. There are
numerous other symbols and symbolic artefacts,
both official and unofficial, including the thistle. Scottish music is a
significant aspect of the nation's culture, with both traditional and
modern influences. An example of a traditional Scottish instrument is
the bagpipe.
The climate of Scotland is temperate
and oceanic, and tends to be very changeable. It is warmed by the Gulf
Stream from the Atlantic, and as such has much milder winters (but
cooler, wetter summers) than areas on similar latitudes. However,
temperatures are generally lower than in the rest of the UK.
